Super-spy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has retired from active duty to trains new IMF agents. But he is called back into action to confront the toughest villain he's ever faced - Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an arms dealer with no remorse or conscience. Hunt assembles his team - his old friend Luther Strickell (Ving Rhames), transportation expert Declan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), background operative Zhen (Maggie Q), and new recruit Lindsey (Keri Russell) - to pursue Davian and to rescue Hunt's love Julia (Michelle Monaghan).

Even as the production continues to prepare for a start date in just two months, Paramount has confirmed rumors that Joe Carnahan has stepped aside due to that classic old catch all excuse of "creative differences" (which can mean... a lot of different things). Paramount is reportedly already in talks with several contenders for his job, with expectations (ie, hopes) that Carnahan's departure will not delay production. Paramount really *needs* this movie to stay on course for release next summer, as it is the lynchpin of their entire 2005 slate; their 800 pound box office gorilla; especially now that it appears their first 'John Carter of Mars' project won't be produced in time for 2005 (no preview page for that one yet, but man, I am a huge fan of the series!).

The 'Mission: Impossible' series... not so much, honestly. I thought the first one was "okay", and the second entry was the first sign that John Woo's American movies are generally disappointments compared to his Hong Kong work (not that I was a super-salivatory fan of them either). Having said that, I'm always willing to give an unproduced movie a chance. Here's hoping this will be the M:I movie that makes me a fan. You never know.
